Playbook - Jones Setting The Edge

The Jets tried quite a few trick plays last Sunday, but The Patriots seemed to be ready for the unconventional stuff. Belichick had his Defense ready for anything in the run game, and this play is evidence of excellent coaching. Rookie Chandler Jones plays his technique perfectly and stops Jeremy Kerley for only 2 yards on a quick reverse. Many young DEs get caught inside when they react to a play-fake, but Jones' discipline here surely makes Belichick proud.

As you can see, The Jets are in a tight bunch formation with a WR split out on the weak side. Shonn Greene is the lone RB behind Mark Sanchez. The Jets are in a balanced look on 1st and 10, and The Patriots counter with base D. #50 Rob Ninkovich is on the end of the line in a 2-point stance next to DE #96 Jermaine Cunningham. #51 Jerod Mayo is playing on the weak side with #55 Brandon Spikes as the Mike LB.

The Jets run a play-action toward Ninkovich and Spikes. Ninkovich takes on his blocker, and gets in position to make a play on the would-be ball carrier. Cunningham and #74 Kyle Love do a good job of standing up their blockers, and if The Jets had handed off to Greene, he would have been stopped for a short gain by Ninkovich and #37 Dennard.

However, The Jets run a reverse to test the discipline of the weak side DE, #95 Chandler Jones. The Tackle blocks down on #75 Vince Wilfork to seal him inside, which leaves Chandler Jones unblocked. Dustin Keller comes across the formation to pick up Jones. Jones shows good strength and discipline in not allowing himself to be sealed outside. Also, Jones does well to not commit inside/outside too early because Kerley could have gone inside or outside his blocker. When Kerley finally commits to the inside, Jones gets off his block and makes the play.

Jones gets one arm on Kerley, which gives Mayo and #27 Tavon Wilson time to clean up the tackle. What looked like a promising play for The Jets gains only 2 yards. Nevertheless, if Jones doesn't get into the running lane, then Mayo would have been a step late. Likewise, Wilson would have been forced to make an open field tackle on a punt returner. Setting the edge is an incredibly important assignment because it affects the whole Defense. Jones has been solid on edge all year, and in this case, he makes an exceptional play to set up the LB and S with easy tackles.
