Patriots Sign DL Jonathan Fanene

This is a move that took me by surprise a bit, but I like the move very much.  Fanene was drafted in the seventh round in 2005 by the Cincinnati Bengals.  Fanene is set to turn 30 next week, and had played his whole career with the Bengals. He recorded a career high in sacks with 6.5 last season.

Fanene projects as an interior pass rusher, but provides some position versatility to play on the end in a 4-3.  Fanene figures to be part of a rotation along the line, but he brings a working class attitude after being drafted in the seventh round.

The organization must grade Fanene highly because his contract is good for three years and nearly $12 Million.  Belichick must be pretty sure about this guy if he is willing to sign him for three years.  Also, the $3.85 Million signing bonus provides evidence that Belichick and his staff really wanted Fanene.

Certainly, Fanene's numbers do not blow you away, but he is a reliable DL that can play in multiple spots along a 4-3 front.  He will be a good addition to the DL, and he is getting enough money that it appears he will play a major role on the 2012 Patriots.  I like it.
