Welker's Contract

The contract talks have reached a stalemate, and Welker is quoted saying that things have gotten "worse."  I have a hard time seeing how creating a media distraction will help his cause, but he seems to be open with the media, and says that "the ball is in their court."

The situation seems to be that the Patriots are comfortable with the 9.5 Million guaranteed in the franchise tag.  They want him to play out the season with the competition at WR.  Perhaps they will give him a deal after final cutdowns, but no one seems too optimistic about it.

Really, the only one with anything to lose is Welker with the 1-year deal.  An injury in this season could be a big disaster for his career.  His leap of faith should be rewarded, and in my opinion, the organization is being stingy.  The dude just wants some security.  No one wants to walk on eggshells all the time.

Will they be able to sign him again if they wait?  I think so.  His value has never been higher, and it will never be higher.  It makes sense to let him play out a year because the only way that his value can go up is if he improves on his stellar 2011.
