Breaking News - Adam Schefter Says So...
The Patriots have cut long time friend Deion Branch... apparently? I thought that Branch was a lock at #3 receiver. Shows how much I know about what goes on behind closed doors in Foxborough.
This comes as more of a shock than the release of QB Brian Hoyer. Hoyer did not significantly outplay Ryan Mallett, so Hoyer's $1.9 Million gets a bit steeper. I think it was the right move, despite the resounding opinion at ESPN that the Patriots would keep all 3 QBs.
This roster is tight: youth and value are rewarded. Branch played well enough in preseason, but he is a known commodity. There may be more to gain by keeping a younger, and less developed WR on the roster. This move may speak to the coaches' comfort level with Brandon Lloyd. Likewise, this may be a move to open up a spot for another TE.
Its always hard to cut a former Superbowl MVP, but at least we don't have to cut Tom Brady. The trophies feel so far away, but this team has what it takes. The plan is in place, the coaches are ready, the players are in place...I just can't wait.
