Playbook - week 2, Offense
This first play is The Patriots first offensive play, which results in a Brady INT by #21 Patrick Peterson. Peterson is in man-to-man against #81 Hernandez with help over-the-top. Brady tries to take the easy read with #11 Edelman on the drag route, but #90 Calais Campbell clogs the passing lane. Brady waits for #87 Gronkowski to clear space for Edelman, but in doing so, misses his passing lane. Campbell tips it up, and Peterson makes a nice catch.
The next play is a zone running play to Ridley behind FB #30 Lex Hilliard. The Guards #70 Mankins and #64 Thomas do a poor job of blocking Dockett and Campbell. Likewise, Hilliard can't find a man to block as Ridley is blown up for no gain. As you can see, Thomas lets his man inside, and has to turn him. Mankins is unable to engage with Campbell, who eventually makes the play. Darnell Dockett gets enough penetration to force Ridley around the outside. Campbell sheds blocks down the line to meet Ridley for no gain.
This next play is a successful draw play to #39 Danny Woodhead. Brady identifies that there is a gap to be attacked. Brady switches the call at the line, and attacks the hole in front of Donald Thomas with a draw. #87 Gronkowski releases inside #50 Sam Acho to force him outside. The Cardinals play right into Brady's hands with the criss-cross stunt of Dockett and Campbell. Donald Thomas gets a good block on #58 Daryl Washington, and Woodhead does a nice job of squeezing through tight space for 4 yards. Despite being stopped on a few power runs, Woodhead is effective on draw plays, and you can see that here.
This next play is a critical 3rd down completion to #87 Gronkowski. The play is designed for #83 Welker and Gronkowski. Woodhead stays in the backfield to help against the 5-man pressure of the Cardinals. #85 Brandon Lloyd and #11 Julian Edelman run vertical routes to open up space underneath. The man on Welker does a good job of being physical at the line, and he forces Welker to the outside. Welker cuts underneath, but the jam did enough to disrupt the timing of the route. However, Gronkowski gets a clean release, and beats the LB on the little push-off route. Brady does very well to squeeze the ball into a tight window here between the LB and the S. First down Patriots.
One final play. This last one is another 3rd and long situation, but the ball goes to Welker. The play design has Welker and Lloyd as the primary reads. Edelman runs off the coverage to open up Welker on the round-ish corner route. Lloyd runs a simple post pattern, drawing double coverage. Gronkowski chips the DE before releasing into the flat. Woodhead just sits underneath as an outlet. Overall, protection is very good, and Brady delivers a perfect ball to Welker. Welker takes his man inside, and then gets a step on him as he cuts toward the sideline. Nice grab on a ball over the shoulder by Welker.
