Game Ball - Wes Welker

A win is a win, and this win means The Patriots win the division. It was a hard fought game, and Miami hung around for nearly 60 minutes. Still, it all played out the way we had imagined with Brady's Pats outlasting Tannehill's Phins. When looking at the box score, no single player stands out more than Welker. Certainly I gave consideration to Vince Wilfork and Stevan Ridley, but Wes was truly the workhorse in this victory.

"Still don't want to pay me?"
Defensively, The Patriots were solid, but no one hogged the stat sheet. No player had more than 6 tackles, and 7 different players had a tackle for a loss. Surprisingly, Trevor Scott had 2 sacks and a tackle for a loss, but I didn't feel like he was the difference in the game. Brandon Spikes led the team in passes defended with 2, but he missed a fumble recovery and didn't make any signature hits. Vince Wilfork rarely lights up the scoreboard, and therefore I defer to Welker and the offense.

Tom Brady obviously didn't have his best game, and pressure was a big part of that (4 sacks). Stevan Ridley had trouble in the early going, but he did manage to save face on that last drive. Ridley and Welker each had a TD, and they each had a similar number of touches. Ridley got 19 carries and Welker got 18 targets.

Welker now has the most 10+ catch games in  NFL history (passing J. Rice and A. Johnson). Ridley reached 1,000 yards on the season. I lean toward Welker because his milestone is more impressive than Ridley's. I just can't take this kind of effort for granted. Welker is a special kind of player, and this game boosted him past Jesus-In-Cleats Jerry Rice. Welker had 12 catches for 103 yards and a TD. He now has 92 catches on the season. And you said they were phasing him out?...

Aaron Hernandez had a nice game, but Welker was Brady's safety valve. Welker's ability to get open quickly was the only thing stopping Brady's 4 sacks from becoming 6 sacks. Welker gets the game ball even if he dropped a sure TD. People talk too much about his drops and they forget just how hard it is to make 12 catches for 100 yards in the NFL. Welker's done it more than anybody. Save that pig skin buddy, its a special one.
