Playbook - Brady INT @ Miami

When Tom Brady throws an interception, the entire team gets deflated in ways that probably come back to Brady. In recent years we have seen Brady produce incredible TD:INT ratios because he goes on incredible streaks without a turnover. He did a nice job of rebounding after the pick, but it was obvious that he was less aggressive with the intermediate-long routes. On this play (the INT) Brady chooses to look at Hernandez down the seam despite having an open Julian Edelman over the middle. Let's take a look:

#22 Stevan Ridley has a red arrow because he runs a play-action fake to the strong side. #81 Aaron Hernandez is lined up as an H-back behind the RT Seabastian Vollmer. He doesn't really fake a block on the play, but he runs a slick double move where he fakes to the flat and cuts upfield. #86 Daniel Fells fakes the block on the DE before running a Gronk-pattern (seam route) and drawing the deep coverage.

The Dolphins do a good job of staying disciplined through the play-fake. The Patriots didn't do much to  sell the fake, or establish the run for that matter. Still, Aaron Hernandez runs a double move, but can't beat his man. Oddly, it looks like the Safety Reshad Jones is beat on the route. Hernandez looks like he has enough space to accelerate past him, but Jones makes up a step and gets hip-to-hip as the ball is getting there.

On the other side, Brady has Edelman wide open. The two DBs on Welker and Edelman get confused on the cross, and provided that Brady could have found the passing lane Edelman would have gained at least 8 yards on a 1st and 10. Welker did a good job of stretching his route into the other defender, but apparently Brady didn't see it.

Overall, I guess I can't blame Brady for throwing to Hernandez, even if the throw wasn't perfect. He looks like he's open as Brady begins his release, but honestly Hernandez may still be suffering ill-effects from his injury. The acceleration just wasn't there. Let's hope another week will make a difference for that ankle. Then again, I have to give credit to Reshad Jones for coming all the way from the inside to make a play. This is a just great play in a league where everyone is playing hurt.

On a Belichickian note: everything could have been better, and has to be against Houston.
