BJGE, Anderson Among Opportunity Costs

The Patriots have done well during the free agency period. They have added quality depth along the DL, OL, and WR corps.  Most of the defensive backs that they have brought in project to be largely special teams players.  The best part of this all is that this quality depth comes at bargain bin pricing.  The Pats did not overextend themselves on any one guy.

Despite bringing in quite a few new faces, the Pats are forced to begin 2012 without a few of their favorite sons.  Mark Anderson is not exactly a fan-favorite, but his sack double digit sack numbers from last year had fans wanting to re-sign him.  However, after seeing the offer sheet that the Bills gave to him (and the opportunity to play opposite Mario Williams) I understand why he chose to walk.

Anderson is set for a four-year stint in Buffalo.  His contract is worth 27.5 Million, with 8 Million guaranteed.  Can't blame Anderson for taking the money, but I am a bit confused as to how the Bills can justify that offer.  Anderson was a 2-down player at most in the Patriots system. He saw more extended action after the Carter injury, but an offer from the Patriots would not have been able to come close to 27.5 Million.  An offer from the Patriots would have been more like 3 years 11 Million with incentives because they view him as part of a rotation rather than as an every down guy.

On the other hand, it is hard to see the Law Firm of BJGE set out for Cincinnati. His 3 years and 9 Million is not as ludicrously expensive as the Anderson deal, but it is still more than the Patriots were willing to extend for the veteran RB.  In my own article I ventured to say that the Patriots must keep BJGE if they can get him to sign for 3 years 6.5 Million.

It is not hard to see why he would prefer the Bengals' deal to my measly offer.  Also, I can understand the Patriots letting him walk.  BJGE is the type of RB that wears down a defense with many carries, but if he doesn't get 15 carries, he become pedestrian at best.  I think the Patriots, under Josh McDaniels offense, are looking for more explosion on few carries.  BJGE did everything the Patriot way, and it is tough to see him go.  Nevertheless, it would not be prudent to spend 3 Million each year on a power runner, when the team's philosophy is pass-first.

I wish the best of luck to BJGE in Cincy, and I hope he is given the steady carries that he couldn't get in New England.  Running behind a young QB should help BJGE's numbers this year. I expect him to be a valuable fantasy player because of his ability to punch it in on the goal line.
