Peter Konz vs David Molk vs Mike Brewster

Seriously, all great names for Centers in the NFL. Konz, Molk, and Brewster (weakest of the three), but that is just book-by-it's cover stuff.

Anyways, Molk is running his mouth quoting that he is "unmatched" by Peter Konz.

"I have skills he doesn’t have. Obviously, my strength is far better, I’m faster, I would say I’m smarter. Obviously, he’s an intelligent person, I’ve talked to him, but I just think I have a technique that’s unmatched [by him]."

Yesterday, I predicted Peter Konz as the Patriots' #27 pick. I did this because leading up to the combine, Peter Konz was an overwhelming favorite. His official NFL combine grades after the event reflect that as well. Peter Konz comes in with a solid 85.0. David Molk limps in with a sorry 59.2.

Molk also said that Mike Brewster, "is nowhere near me as a player." Brewster posted a 58.0.

It seems that Konz is still an overwhelming favorite, but in checking the combine stats you will see a strange picture. Konz and Molk participated only in the 225lb bench press. Konz only had 18 reps, while Molk posted the second best overall with 41.

Brewster ran a 5.35s 40. He posted 29 reps. He leapt 25" vertically and 96" in the broad. Had a 7.73s in the 3-cone, and did the 20 yard shuttle in 4.60s.
Among all Offensive Linemen:
David Molk was #1 in the bench press, Brewster was #13, and Konz was #44 out of 48.

Brewster did well in the 40, but struggled in the jumping events. This indicates that he lacks explosion off the line, and at the point of attack. However, he moves well for a guy his size, performing his best in the 20 yard shuttle and 3-cone drills. He is expected to be a very reliable backup.

Mike Brewster - height 6'2" arm length 31 1/2" weight 312lbs hands 9 1/2"
STRENGTHS Brewster is a very good athlete in space. Some of the foot movements that he struggles with inside do not hinder him when moving to the second level, and he is good to fit his body on linebackers and get movement there. He is a competitive player who can make all the front-calls and understands angles and lower-base anchoring when he blocks. He has been durable and dependable for the Buckeyes.
WEAKNESSES Brewster is not very consistent coming off the ball to get into his blocks and can fall off late. It seems at times like he is so concerned with his pre-snap reads that he is slow moving off the ball. He will have a tough time against quicker defenders off the ball at the next level.

Analysis: Mike Brewster looks hesitant coming off the ball, and is not very consistent getting into his blocks. He reminds me of a Dan Connolly, a C/G swing guy that needs time to adjust to the speed of NFL offense. He could be a very solid center down the road.

David Molk- height 6'1" arm length 32" weight 298lbs hands 8 7/8"
STRENGTHS
Molk is quick off the line of scrimmage and gains an advantage on his man immediately. He is also quick to get out when pulling and can gather speed rather quickly to bury any linebacker in his site. He displays good footwork in nearly all of his movements and has a good pass set where he is able to quickly chop his feet and adjust to oncoming rushers.

WEAKNESSES
Molk can have trouble sustaining his blocks through the end of run plays. He often has to pull his man down with him to keep him out of the play and finds it difficult to generate enough push early to create a solid hole for his backs. He is reliable to not allow sacks in pass production but can get off balance when setting against bull rushes.

Analysis: David Molk is trying to create some buzz for himself so that he will be drafted. He is not a good run blocker, and he has trouble with bull rushes up the middle. That seems like the worst kind of pressure for Tom Brady.

Peter Konz- height 6'5" arm length 33" weight 314lbs hands 9 1/4"
STRENGTHS
Konz looks natural sitting in his stance and swiveling his head to make all the line calls, which is impressive given his uncommon height. He is a smooth athlete who has demonstrated the ability to uncoil his hips into defenders and blow them back to create quick holes in the run game. Konz is a smart player who picks up stunts well and uses his strength and anchor to sit and stall any oncoming bull rushers. He is comfortable to work in fluid motion with his guards when pulling and sealing. He has all the tools to be an elite center for years to come.

WEAKNESSES
Even though Konz has good flexibility, defenders will be able to out-leverage him at the point given his size. He can get stunned by quick bull rushes at the point and has a difficult time resetting his feet afterwards. While he is an effective short-area mover he looks limited and rigid when moving in space or downfield.

Analysis: Peter Konz is on the border of being too tall for a center, but apparently he looks natural and has good "knee bend." He is generally too big, and most of his problems stem from being too big. Given his ineptitude in the bench press, I would say that he has much strength to gain. He has been getting recognition for his play on the field with his solid technique. He will be a rookie, but he has talent to become a staple of an NFL franchise.
