A Few Notes and Links
1. Brady's new commercial is pretty funny, mostly because he gets pissed off and yells at everyone. You don't see that much angry Brady off the field, but here it is.
2. Patriots release WR Anthony Gonzalez. Welker's insurance policy is no longer needed, and his 1 year contract made him easy to release. Expect 2-3 more cuts at WR. I'm guessing Matt Roark and Britt Davis are goners for sure, but both are core special teams players. This may force BB to choose to eliminate Ocho, Stallworth, and/or Branch. Draft pick Jeremy Ebert will likely spend a year on the practice squad.
3. Patriots are still looking to try out TEs, Bo Scaife being the latest. The health of that position can be a major factor in gameplanning. It would be nice to get some quality backups behind each Gronkowski and Hernandez. The problem is that the drop-off is considerable because of their unique specializations and athleticism.
In the long term, finding a middle-of-the-road TE seems to me to be a better option than carrying 4 TEs on a crowded roster. If Scaife could be an all-around improvement to Daniel Fells, then he is worth an investment. Scaife and Fells are both 6'3"-6'4" around 250, sort of a middle ground between Gronk and Hernandez.
In the short term there are injuries to Gronkowski and Fells. There are indications that Gronkowski will need as much time as possible, so rookie free agent TE Nick Melillo has been brought in as an able-bodied stop-gap for a few weeks of OTAs and Camp.
4. Safety Steve Gregory's contract details have been released and he will be receiving just over 7 Million over the next 3 years. This kind of money indicates that he has immediate and indefinite value on special teams, and figures to compete for a starting job. His contract suggests that he will be on the field with regularity, but how he figures into the secondary and in sub packages remains to be seen. If he outperforms James Ihedigbo as a starter, then this contract will represent great value for the team.
