RIP Junior Seau

A great loss to the football community.  I heard on the radio (97.5 The Fanatic Philadelphia) that there is speculation that the Seau shot himself in the chest (not in the head) because he wants to have his head examined in conjunction with the many head injury lawsuits against the NFL. If this is true, it is a sad allegation.

The idea that injuries sustained while playing may have influenced a suicide is a sad consequence of a violent game.

Many have condemned Roger Goodell's punishments to the players involved with BountyGate, particularly Jonathan Vilma, who is banned for a full season.  I do think that Goodell's punishment is a draconian measure, but he is not simply punishing the act of establishing bounties. He is desperately trying to change the culture around the league in order to save it from death by litigation.

Taking extreme measures to punish the Saints for the bounty scandal is Goodell's best legal defense to these head injury lawsuits. It just makes sense. Goodell has to save face here.
