Molasses Mike Jenkins

I am not sure what everybody is whining about with this guy. He caught 40 passes with Christian Ponder and a run heavy Offense. Sure, his nickname is "Molasses Mike" and he probably isn't very fast comparatively, but he has an asset that very few Patriot WRs have had, 6'4" size.

The problem with the New England fan base is that we are so quick to compare our current fortunes with the best case scenario. Sorry guys, but 2007 Randy Moss isn't walking through that door. 2004 Rodney Harrison ain't walking through that door. Adrian Wilson and Mike Jenkins are past-their-prime guys that could turn some heads.

Instead, we should be thinking about the worst possible downsides: #1 We don't sign Emmanuel Sanders or Victor Cruz (and also don't waste a draft pick) #2 Jenkins and Wilson get cut before the season, and a minimal amount of salary cap space is wasted.

I am not sure that Adrian Wilson and Mike Jenkins are in the same boat regarding their ability to play, but both guys have pretty low expectations. Likewise, people are whining like Belichick is not even exploring the high profile free agents. People are complaining that Sanders would have been better than Jenkins, but Sanders only had 44 receptions last year and would have been much more expensive.

Not only do I think this was a good pickup because Jenkins is a cheap veteran that will compete for a roster spot as a large WR, I think that Molasses Mike will make the team. I think he will bring solid blocking on the outside and a large catch radius on quick timing routes. Those are some good assests to have!

Stop comparing this guy to Randy Moss. No one expects him to "stretch the field." The fans are calling for a WR that can do that, but that guy isn't really on the market for a decent price. Jenkins boasts nice route running and good hands. If he catches 16 passes for 150 yards as a situational player, then he will exceed Deion Branch's production from last season. Both had contracts for the veteran minimum.

I can see Jenkins trying to fill a role as a TE-hybrid as well as an outside receiver. It is a widely held belief that he can't separate from DBs anymore, but it was a widely held opinion that OchoCinco could. Who knows with free agents? Overall though, I think he could fill a depth role. He can block better than Kellen Winslow Jr., he's bigger than Deion Branch, and he doesn't cost anything significant.

Bottom line, quit your bitching about trying to fill the WR position! We still have a bunch of cap room, just because we signed this guy doesn't mean that we are done with free agency.
