Welker Gets The Cold Shoulder...

In what comes as an entirely expected stand-still of non-events, the Welker contract situation ends exactly where it started: at the Franchise Tag of about $9 Million guaranteed money for a one year deal.  The story was hyped incessantly by the likes of one Adam Schefter, but nothing ever really happened.  Even I had begun to think that Welker would get his deal, but once again, nothing ever really happened.

The story flows like this:

a.) Patriots lose the Super Bowl, and Welker blames himself; heads into free agency.
b.) Patriots begin talks with Welker and other free agents
c.) It is roundly expected the Patriots will apply the Franchise Tag to Welker
d.) Suspicion about whether or not Welker would hold out for a long term deal begins
e.) Patriots assign Welker the franchise tender.
f.) Welker reports that contract talks have gotten "worse"
g.) Welker reports to all mandatory mini-camp events, etc.
h.) Some hopeful pundits thought Gronkowski's deal would clear space to sign Welker
i.) NFL deadline to sign Franchised Players passes without any indication of negotiation
j.) Welker will make $9 Million this year. end of story.
