Hernandez vs Gronk - Contract Talk

First they were rookies, and they were crazy good.  Then, we realized that Gronk was the real deal.  Aaron Hernandez was lagging not far behind, but Gronkowski soaked in the limelight.  The enlightened fan knows that it is the combination of Gronk and Hernandez, (Smash n' Dash) makes for the dynamic production. When they are on the field together, they are the most dangerous.

Gronk signed for 6 years $54 million. (9 per year)
Hernandez signs for 5 years $40 million (8 per year)

Both have guaranteed money and large signing bonuses, and both contracts are market setters for future tight ends.  The Patriots have put a very high value on the TE position, and they are paying for versatile and reliable players that are young.  The thinking seems to be that their values will rise, their production will continue to flourish, and striking a deal now avoids a higher price tag from a more proven player.  It also avoids any sniff of free agency, which is in the organization's favor because it avoids an open auction that would drive up the price.  Overall, great signing.

Wes Welker, prepare to be franchise tagged again next year, and get a 20% raise.

In other news, WRs Donte' Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney were cut, having seen limited reps and having no interest in special teams. Also released were, Ross Ventrone, Gerard Warren and Tim Bulman.  Meanwhile, safeties Will Allen and Josh Barrett go to IR with FB Spencer Larsen. Jake Ballard Myron Pryon are moved to the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list and could return as early as week 7.  Lastly, Markus Zusevcis has been moved to the NFI (Non-Football Injury) list. Nobody cares about WR Kerry Taylor.
