Wrapping Up Week 1 Storylines and News

1.  Wes Welker needs only 4 receptions to eclipse Troy Brown as the New England franchise leader in terms of receptions.  If Welker does grab 4 balls, he will have achieved 558 catches in only 74 games played.  This would be twice as fast as Brown, who played in over 150 games.

2. Brian Waters' nameplate was taken down from his locker this week.  The hope of his return dwindles a bit further, but it is possible that the team has been waiting until after week 1 to sign the veteran.  If he signs after the first game, then his money is not guaranteed.  The same situation could be at play with Deion Branch, where the team is just trying to hedge its bets with some older players.

3. FB Lex Hilliard and TE Michael Hoomanawanui are settling in to their 1-year contracts (both roughly .5 million).  However, they are continuing to work hard and improve the depth an flexibility of the offensive skilled players.

4. Shane Vereen has been ruled Out for Sunday's game.  Meanwhile, Nick McDonald, Daniel Fells, Sterling Moore, and Sebastian Vollmer have been ruled Questionable.  Patrick Chung is listed as Probable.

5. Devon McCourty has been voted to the status of team captain by his mates, and he will join Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo as Defensive Captain.  Logan Mankins and Tom Brady represent the Offense, while Matthew Slater serves as Staff Sergeant to the Special Teams.

6. There seems to be a great amount of trust between Belichick and his OC McDaniels.  Indeed, McDaniels has been a head coach in the league, so he brings excellent insight on guys that he has coached or seen from other divisions and from the NFC.  The signing of WR Greg Salas seems to be a move where Bill trusts Josh to bring in a guy that can fill a role.  Patriots nation is trusting that McDaniels knows his stuff because we can thank him for Brandon Lloyd and new TEs Fells and Hooman...

7. Devon McCourty faces off against his twin brother Jason, who also plays CB.  Jason and Devon are pretty close, and even share a twitter account.  I wonder if we will see these two on the field at the same time, perhaps on kick/return units.  I don't think we will, but maybe something will happen to put them face-to-face.  That would be pretty cool.

8.  The Patriots used the new short-term IR designation for TE Viscanthe Shiancoe, so he may return sometime later this season.
