Playbook - Seattle Offense

So, I wanted to take a look at Russell Wilson's ability to throw on the run, especially across his body. Turns out, he's darn good. Not to mention fast. The Patriots are going to need to keep him in the pocket. The DEs must stay disciplined against the play action to Lynch.

Seattle had a lot of success outside the pocket against Carolina last week. Lets see:

As you can see, Seattle is in the shotgun with 3WR/1TE/1RB. Wilson motions the TE Zack Miller across the formation to give him an option on the left side when he rolls out. The play is designed for a play-action fake to #24 Marshawn Lynch and a college-football-esq roll out by Wilson. The problem for Carolina is that their DE bites down on the run fake, totally losing contain on the outside.

Russell Wilson is fast, and keeping him inside the pocket is priority #1. However, his running ability is not the threat. Wilson becomes a much better passer when his options are limited. Also, Wilson is under 6 feet and he probably sees the field better when he's not behind the taller linemen.

Here he rolls out on a naked bootleg and finds two viable options: he has an easy throw to the sideline towards #86 Miller or a tough throw across his body to #89 Baldwin. He hits Baldwin for 20 yards. Seriously, he is dangerous on the run and can make accurate throws across his body. Keep him in the pocket.

Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich, be warned....
