Playbook - Double Moves

This play is a 1st and 10 in Texans territory, and it ends in a Wes Welker catch to the 4 yard line. The play is set up by double moves on the outside by Welker and Lloyd. Likewise, Brady sets this one up with a clever pre-snap motion of Hernandez. By moving him away from Welker, Brady gets the coverage to rotate away. The Safety on Welker's side assumes deep help on Lloyd, and leaves Welker all alone in man-coverage.

Brady sees that Hernandez is getting man-coverage from a Safety, and he motions him to see how the defense will respond. The Texans don't do a great job of disguising their intentions, and Brady sees that the Safety is getting further and further from Welker. This indicates that he will play cover-1, and he seems pre-occupied with Lloyd.

I am pretty sure that Welker sees this action as well, and he makes the most of his opportunity. Welker runs an aggressive out-route, and as soon as the CB turns his hips, Welker gets upfield. The Safety in the middle has his back turned, chasing Lloyd on the other side, so Brady makes the easy throw to a wide-open Welker. Welker makes a diving catch, and is ruled down at the 4 yard line.

As much as the coverage afforded an easy throw, the protection needs to be lauded for holding up against a 6-man pressure. The Texans were packing heat on the edges, and I was very impressed with Hoomanawanui's blocking. He held up against OLB Connor Barwin like he was a starting LT. Usually Daniel Fells is the primary blocking TE, but Hooman must have had a nice week of practice to earn more reps.

This wasn't a true 6-man pressure because the ILB doesn't blitz until he sees Ridley stay in to block. Nevertheless, Ridley never puts a block on him because Mankins is able to rotate over to hit him. Overall, the interior O-line did a nice job of holding their 1-on-1 blocks, and rotating off when needed.  This is a slow-developing play, and protection needs to be spot-on if its going to have a chance.

The Texans were taken completely unaware in coverage, and didn't get any real pressure to compensate. Credit Brady for recognizing the coverage. Credit McDaniels for drawing it up. Credit Welker for the diving catch. But most of all, credit the protection for giving Brady enough time and space to throw deep.
